Toft cottage is a beautiful, 'chocolate box' cottage tucked away in a leafy corner of Cheshire.
The owners approached Bridge Architects to retain the existing house (which was formerly a series of very small workers cottages) and provide an extension suitable for modern living. Situated in Green Belt, this presented very specific challenges based around detailed volume calculations to establish viable solutions.
The preferred scheme retains the existing building untouched, providing a new, single storey extension to the rear which reads as a 'garden wall', acting as a backdrop against which to read the existing house. The low white rendered volume is a series of enclosed and open spaces which reveal key views across the open countryside surrounding the house, and provides privacy to elements of the house and garden.
